History of the Alexandria Bay Figure Skating Club

In 1972, a group of dedicated community members worked together to form the Alexandria Bay Figure Skating Club. Since that time countless Board Members, Parents and Skaters have dedicated their time to the club. The founding members of the Alexandria Bay Figure Skating Club were: Madge Coiro, President; Doris Langlois, Vice President; Stella Edick, Secretary & Treasurer; Mike Coiro; Bette Hewitt; Keith Irwin; Shirley Irwin; Charles Mitchell; Mike Quencer; Nancy McLennan; Dr. Robert Tague;  and Jean Tague. 

The Alexandria Bay Figure Skating Club is among one of the oldest skating clubs in the country. Ours is club # 25 in the United States. The early days of the club were different than today. The vol­unteers, members and officers were also responsible for creating ice each day for the figure skating sessions. The club began with an outdoor rink. The club's very first instructor was also one of its founders: Mrs. Madge Coiro. The purpose of the club was then, as it is today, to encourage the instruction, practice and advancement of our members in the dis­cipline of figures, free skating and ice dancing as well as cultivat­ing a spirit of camaraderie among ice skaters. 

Today, the Alexandria Bay Figure Skating Club has a growing Learn to Skate program with first year membership free. We offer a Junior and Senior Program. Both have a one day or two day option. Our professional instructors are fully U.S. Figure Skating certified and offer private lessons at all levels. Our offerings include Group Dance Lessons, Synchronized Skating, and Power Skating is sometimes available.  Our skaters who chose to compete have won numerous medals and have often qualified for the Skate Games of America. 

A few of our former skaters have gone on to be coaches. What we are most proud of is all the former skaters who chose to have their children join the club and rejoin the club as parents and often serve as board members.
